What is the Best Way to Tax People?

With the 2012 Presedential Election almost one year away, debates among republican and democrat candidates are in full-swing. Among the issues being discussed is that of taxes, the system that we all hate but rely on to some extent. taxes cartoon

What Should Change?

It needs to be simple. I have an accountant handle our taxes every single year. I have been going to him since I was 16 (with my first job) and will continue to use his services. Every year I take a bunch of papers I've collected the past twelve months and hand them to him. He shuffles through them, marks what needs to go where, and does everything for me. The one thing he always says to me is that each year changes. New tax codes, laws, loop holes, etc. Things that me, Average Joe American, simply cannot do on my own.

What needs to change? Just make it simple. I'm not an expert, so I don't have a well thought out opinion on how it should change, but if there is a change coming it needs to be simple. Flat tax, less tax, whatever. Just make it easy. Paying taxes (and knowing what to pay, to whom, for what, and what deductions I can take available of, etc) shouldn't be rocket science.

Paying Our Fair Share

Whether we like it or not, taxes in our country (and any country, for that matter) is a part of life. It is a part of being a citizen and contributing to the better good. It is what allows us to travel on safe roads, have a company (fire) keep our house from burning down, and an ambulance pick us up when we need emergency care. All of these, and much more (like our Military), are provided to us as citizens because we pay our taxes, we pay our fair share.

What are your thoughts? Should we have taxes? Should the system change? If so, how so?
